“I’m often asked while painting out in nature ‘How do you decide what to paint?’ I can usually simplify my answer by gesturing with open arms and a big smile towards the incredible vista in front of us. Massive walls of stone baking in the morning sun, rushing water coming down from snowfields stubbornly resisting long summer days, twisted and weathered junipers, voids so big you can hear them. I seek out places that stop me in my tracks, get in my soul, and demand a kind of reverence. That’s when I know it’s time to try and capture that feeling of being in the presence of greatness.”

Brian DeYoung is a Chicago born artist currently living in Salt Lake City, chasing landscapes to get lost in and using any excuse to get outdoors for nature to take his breath away. With so much to see around every corner of his endless Western backyard, he feels effortlessly inspired to sit and paint in awe of the beauty and humbling power he surrounds himself with.
